With the help of two Slow Money loans, one for a industrial mixer and the other for a commercial grade oven in 2010, she started Abilicious Bakery. Abi makes delicious gluten-free baked goods and granolas, inventing fabulous recipes and adding new customers almost daily! She sources local ingredients as much as possible, sells at local Farmer's Markets, and runs her own gluten-free CSA, or rather CSB. Her snickerdoodles can't be beat. She's added an employee, picked…

There’s nothing better than turning locally grown fruits & vegetables (likely harvested yesterday!) into baby food that nourishes our youngest eaters. Some of our fun flavors include Cuban black beans with roasted plantain, mango &…

Hot Bread Kitchen is a non profit bakery that works to improve the lives of foreign-born and low-income minority women living in New York City. We do this by offering on-the-job artisanal baking training and paid English fluency classes. Upon graduation, we place women in management track positions in the culinary industry or help them to launch their own food businesses. Since launch in 2007, we have trained 25 women from 12 countries in artisanal baking and English fluency.

To fund our training, we sell an international line of breads inspired by our bakers. Made using local and organic ingredients,…

They feature local and organic food in a family friendly atmosphere (with a lovely kids space). 18 Rabbits brings food back to its roots through organic granola and granola bars. They use locally sourced ingredients, support other small businesses and organic farms, and believe that everyone has a right to pure and delicious food. Inspired by her pet Blackjack's rabbit rendezvous, 18 Rabbits' Alison Vercruysse merges the magic of childhood with the power of healthy fare. It is this message that makes the company so unique – why should we have to think so hard about where our food is coming from?

All organic and Fairtrade coffee beans are served here, and the essence is truly in roasting each bean in-house. Management stresses the importance of buying and supporting local farms. The following items are local and organic: honey, spring greens, spinach, lettuce, blue cheese, eggs, pork, vegan scones, vegan muffins, vegan cookies, and vegan cakes. Their tea is also organic Fairtrade, with select flavors also being local. The service is also excellent here.
