      • Farmstead Meat Smith

With daylong workshops and a planned series of free online video tutorials, Brandon Sheard teaches livestock owners how to slaughter, butcher and process small animals. It's not difficult to learn. He averages two or three classes a month. When the class includes a feast, the fee is $150 per person for the whole day. Hands-on is the name of the game.

          • Batch

31 Germania St, Bldg I/J Jamaica Plain, MA 02130 Ice cream made with fresh ingredients not flavors from a bottle, without a strange list of ingredients, and available in the grocery store. Batch, a small ice cream company in Boston started by 2 women, is doing just that. They use fresh ingredients like ginger, vanilla beans, cinnamon sticks, and their own caramel. They leave out ingredients guar gum, xanthan gum, mono-diglycerides, carageenan, etc. to produce a pure ice cream with a simple list of recognizable ingredients. Their methods are unique and pushing the bounds of an industry geared towards only…

              • Retail Relay

Retail Relay takes online orders from customers for products from 20+ local stores and farms, does all the shopping (faxes orders to stores), and has pickup spots all over town where customers can pick up their orders the following day. It reduces driving and encourages patronage of local businesses. It's not "slow" in the way a farmers' market is, but it is bringing a lot of new business to small stores and farms. RR offers great customer service: the first order is delivered to the customer's home for free, and, during the 3 blizzards we had this year, they delivered…

This business is a: Small company making sustainably harvested red-cedar grow beds with fitted coveres that desrves your support because, Grow Yr' Own beds have enabled many New Mexicans (and others) to successfully grow vegetables in an area that has very challenging soil and wind. They really work for people who want to garden but don't have the know-how or the patience to break up caliche. One can grow in them even in the winter. Schools have bought them because they are effective and show good results. This two-year old business is really catching on and benefitting so many people,…

The project where PCFMA wants to help farmers and people needing jobs is the perfect virtuous circle that would be amazing if it could be funded and used as an "open source" template for such initiatives nationwide. I know you know about it, but of all the projects this seems to have such a huge potential to many communities if replicated.

                                    • BK Farmyards

BK Farmyards' strategy is very unique - to exist in the "cracks" of urban development as a local source of food. They partner with land owners and public space in Brooklyn to grow food on idle land and sell it to the community. They have also used their success to build a farm and integrated curriculum at the School For Public Service in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, where they are teaching kids about growing vegetables. BK Farmyards is a great slow money business because they have tapped into the growing market and interest for food grown with sustainable, urban farming methods…
